Located in the iconic Los Angeles neighborhood of Crestwood Hills, this 1949 home by A. Quincy Jones was restored with Andreas Larsson of HAB House.
The project reversed decades of damage done by previous owners by reviving details and materials specified by the architect over 70 years ago, while instilling modern features in a manner consistent with Jones' iconic style.
Scarce paint samples informed a custom stained + painted plywood language throughout the home to match the restored brick and redwood siding. A redesigned kitchen drew inspiration from elegantly simple, curved plywood handles.
With a wealth of historic photography and drawings, we were able to recreate custom built-ins and lighting. Two bedrooms have redesigned desk + closet combinations as Jones envisioned.
This house is an early example of the Mutual Housing Association homes of Crestwood Hills, unique not only for its modernist architecture, but also for having been the only successful housing cooperative in the state of California. It was conceived of by four studio musicians returning from WWII, who devised a plan that would pool the resources of multiple owners to develop a community of modern homes. Fewer of the homes were built than originally envisioned, and unfortunately fewer still remain intact. The Hart House was originally a "Model 104," one of the smaller models available.
